South Florida Miles for Meso 8K Returns to Raise Awareness and Funding for Rare Cancer Caused by Asbestos Exposure

Wellesley Hills, MA (PRWEB) February 10, 2011

Sokolove Law, a leading provider of legal services and the nations most trusted mesothelioma law firm, is proudly serving as a presenting sponsor of the 2011 South Florida Miles for Meso road race. Now in its third year, the South Florida Miles for Meso event will feature an 8K road race and a 4K tribute walk to create mesothelioma awareness and raise money to support research for a cure. All proceeds will benefit the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation.

Miles for Meso is an opportunity for the survivors, current patients, communities and advocacy groups involved in the fight against mesothelioma to take to the streets to help develop better treatment options for this devastating disease, said Ricky LeBlanc, Managing Attorney at Sokolove Law. This is a shared fight, and were honored to play a major role in this years event.

Mesothelioma is a rare and aggressive form of cancer that affects the smooth lining of the lungs, chest cavity and abdomen. Approximately 3,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with the disease every year, and some sources predict that this rate will continue to increase over time. Virtually all mesothelioma cases are linked to asbestos exposure. While new treatments are improving survival rates for patients, currently there is no cure for mesothelioma. Early detection and treatments are further complicated due to mesotheliomas long latency period. Symptoms of mesothelioma typically do not appear for years or even decades after a persons initial exposure to asbestos.

The latency of mesothelioma is one of the greatest challenges victims face, making it difficult to diagnose and treat their condition early, let alone gathering evidence if they decide to pursue a mesothelioma lawsuit against the companies who knowingly exposed them to this deadly material, explained LeBlanc. Education and awareness truly is a major weapon in the fight against this disease.

Despite the known health hazards associated with asbestos, the United States government has yet to fully issue a ban on the material and asbestos-containing products are still being used today. In addition to raising money for a mesothelioma cure, Sokolove Law also hopes to raise awareness for the Ban Asbestos Now! advocacy program, which strives to eliminate mesothelioma at its source. Asbestos has been used by hundreds of companies and in thousands of common products ranging from insulation, pipes, brakes and tiles to household items like oven mitts, hair driers and even childrens toys. To date, more than 50 countries have banned asbestos.
